Larry Thompson
VP of Security at Orlando Magic
Prior to becoming the VP of Security, Larry served as the Director of Security for the Orlando Magic, providing team security and oversight and coordination of security functions related to games and player activities.
He administered security protocols promulgated by the NBA and coordinated with other NBA team security managers and venue directors to ensure the safety and security of players, coaches, staff, and visitors to NBA events. In his role as Director of Security he also performed and oversaw various security functions related to the Magic’s administrative, business, and operational activities.
Preceding his employment with the Magic, Larry served as the Assistant Sergeant At Arms for Police Services and Law Enforcement for the Sergeant At Arms of the US House of Representatives. There he directed and coordinated specific functions of the Sgt. At Arms Office relating to security, law enforcement liaison activities, and protective engagements. Interacting with Members of Congress, their staff, Congressional Committees, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, and other governmental and non-governmental groups, Larry ensured that the security needs of the House of Representatives were addressed and met.
For one year after his retirement from the United States Capitol Police, Larry was the Missions Director for New Life Wesleyan Church, in La Plata, MD. There he oversaw and coordinated the missions efforts of the New Life Network churches, including work in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, and directed benevolence operations at the main church campus.
For over 28 years, Larry served as a member of the United States Capitol Police, progressing through the ranks to serve as the Acting Assistant Chief, before retiring. As a commanding officer of various organizational elements within this federal law enforcement agency, Larry developed expertise in all areas of administrative, law enforcement and security management, with a proven record of accomplishment. With a history of awards and rapid promotion, Larry acquired proven senior-level experience in executive decision-making, policy direction, strategic business planning, Congressional relations, financial and human capital management, research and development, and inter-agency cooperation.
Larry has a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science, earned at the University of Central Missouri, and a Master of Science degree (with honors) in Theological Studies from Liberty University. Larry and his wife Lori are the proud parents of three grown children, and the doting grandparents of a grandson and two granddaughters.
